Friday 55 Flash Fiction #105 Down to Earth....

Back from a fabulous cruise, a dream realised.

Tanned, relaxed, happy.

Looking forward to retirement.

No pressure, no stress.

The doctor calls - "I need to see you".

Take this tablet, take that tablet, more blood tests

You have diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure.

"What?"

Thanks doc.

My medication is free, so that’s good news!

This is not fiction.   I should point out that I have absolutely no symptoms or ill effects and it was purely intuition that made me ask the doctor for a cholesterol test, which uncovered the problems.  I am thankful for my intuition.

Friday 55 Flash Fiction is brought to you by G-man (Mr Knowitall). The idea is you write a story in exactly 55 words. If you want to take part pop over and let G-man know when you've posted your 55.

i am so sorry for your diagnosis. my entire family has diabetes, but me. diabetes is manageable and some people think it is reversible. there is a documentary called RAW for 30 days. it is really a wonderful watch and extremely insightful and helpful. now i wouldn't suggest that i myself am ready to go completely Raw, but i do incorporate a lot of the ideas and theories into my daily habits, more fresh vegetables and fruits, i grow a garden and eat my own veggies in the summer and drink lots of water. the key is to keep your sugars stable and you won't get sick. do not let them spike and drop and do not think you can eat bad food and make up for it with a little extra insulin. walking will help immensely as diabetes likes to attack veins and your circulatory system. i know diabetes and the thought of it scares me and i know your heart fell into your stomach as soon as you heard the news. keep hope alive and eat well that is the key. watch that documentary and maybe you will get some positive ideas on how to live with this or even be inspired to try to cure it.
i am so glad you had a wonderful trip and i know there are many more blessings to come. i am glad you are aware of your health and i believe you will be able to take really good care of yourself.

I am thinking positively Thom, it's a real wake-up call to get back on the healthy eating and lose the weight. I know I'll be OK. x

Hi Lesya, thankyou for your kind thoughts, the cruise was unforgettable! :)

Thankyou so much for all the information Clean & Crazy. I know diabetes is manageable and that's exactly what I intend to do - manage it. :)

Unfortunately I need the pills apparently Dulce but it's good that I have been diagnosed. :)

The meds will become a part of my life and as long as they keep me well I'll keep taking them Hessie, thanks m'dear. :)

Thanks for the Reiki rebound Bee you can be sure I will be treating myself with it too. xx

Not nice to come back to, but best you know - and you can still enjoy your retirement.

Brian Miller said...

at least you know what it is and can do something about it. hope you are well. nice 55.

Elaine Denning said...

That must have been such a shock for you; but I'm so glad you found out after, rather than before. Can you imagine how it would have affected you over there?

Best of luck with it all, Ak. Send that reiki to yourself and stay positive. Big hugs. xxx

Ron said...

Oh, so sorry to hear about this, m'dear.

However, at least now that you're retired you'll have lots of time to give your health attention.

You're a strong lady, so I know you're gonna be just fine.

Know that I'll be sharing Reiki with you, m'dear, as I know you'll be sharing with yourself.

{{{{{{{{ Akelamalu }}}}}}

Have a great weekend!

Oh dear! I hope that isn't going to cramp your style.

Alice Audrey said...

Hugs. That can't be easy. But I bet the vacation was good for you.

Akelamalu said...

Oh yes Anthony I will make adjustments and enjoy my retirement even more. :)

Precisely Brian! I haven't felt ill at all so it's lucky I asked for the blood test.

I had an inkling before we went away Laney because I'd already had a blood test. I'm quite positive about it all because I've found out early before any symptoms. My intuition told me I needed a check up.

I think it was Reiki made me ask for the test Ron because I certainly didn't have any symptoms! Thanks for the Reiki m'dear and of course I'll be treating myself. x

Julia Phillips Smith said...

I agree with Anthony North. I already have high blood pressure and I'm twenty years shy of retirement - but I've been managing it for a decade now and all is well.

My mom is diabetic and she's also managing hers - medically she's in much better shape than she should be, if you know what I mean... ;-)

There are ways to keep enjoying the life you love as well as making a few key changes. There's not much joy left if you feel that all of your favorite things need to take the old heave-ho.

You are an awesome woman and I know you'll do everything in your power to take care of yourself the best way possible. I suggest taking more cruises. ;)

Go to my doctor once... he'll put you on so many pills, you'll think you're dying!

Akelamalu said...

NO fear Cheshire Wife! LOL

The vacation was just the ticket Alice and we're planning more. :)

MWM has been on medication for high BP for years and it's not been a problem Julia. I am confident all my ailments will be controlled and won't cause me any problems. :)

More cruises sound great Snowelf, I just won't be able to eat as much as I did on this one! LOL

LOL Buff, they do that don't they!

Linda said...

Well this is certainly NOT the type of Friday Flash Fiction that I usually enjoy here at your blog. Boo to all of that but yay that you had that check and you've got it under control. And an even bigger yay that your health care covers it all!

Can we go back to the usual twist next week, please?? :-)

Cloudia said...

I too am thankful for your intuition.
Such a true post. Good reason to cherish our days as you do, Ake.

Akalamalu, my husband was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He's has it under control and is doing very well. I wish the same to you!

maryt/theteach said...

Intuition on my part revealed a slight heart problem... you gotta be pro-active with your own health...

Gledwood said...

Talking of cruises, did you spend lots of money in the on-board casino..??!?

Just wondering. I cannot believe Channel 5 are allowed to broadcast 4 hours or more of live roulette after midnight ~ and on terrestrial analogue TV as well. Whatever is this country coming to?

I'm glad your intuition led you to get the care you need ... and sharing your experience reminds us all how important paying attention to ourselves is. Fun to see the photos from your cruise ... looks like a wonderful one ;-)

Thanks Willy

Fingers crossed Eternally Distracted

Thanks for the encouragement Teach and I'm glad to hear your husband is doing well and that acting on your intuition got your heart problem diagnosed. :)

We didn't go into the casino at all Gleds, we're not gamblers.

I've never been afraid to get things checked out where my health is concerned HappilyRetiredGal, I'm of the mind that I can cope with anything as long as I know what it is. :)

My thoughts entirely Gaelikaa :)

Yep a bit of a blow Trav but not the end of the world. :)

Definitely Lettuce! x

I'm following the doctor's instructions and the diagnosis has spurred me on to lose the weight I've been telling myself should go Sandi. I'm also doing more exercise, so it's a positive thing. I will live with it and make the best of things. :)
