Gold Rush.........

You remember last week when I told you about photographing all my jewellery and making bequests?    Well that little job lead to something else.

Whilst sorting through my jewellery I found lots of gold pieces that were no longer of any use - ie broken bits of chain, odd earrings, etc.    There has been an advert on the telly recently called 'Postal Gold' where you make a request and they send you an envelope to send them your unwanted gold.   Here's what they say:

Postal Gold buys gold jewellery for melting and refining. When you send us your unwanted or broken jewellery we analyse how much pure gold is contained in it and based on the current market price of gold, we calculate your payout. If for any reason you feel that your items have not been fairly evaluated by Postal Gold, simply return our payout within 7 days of the payout date. Postal Gold will promptly return your gold.

I didn't have a lot and it was all stuff I would never wear or give to anyone, so I sent if off expecting maybe £10 if I was lucky but guess what?    I got a cheque for £73.17!

This is not a paid post, I just thought I'd pass on the information as someone who's tried it and is really pleased with what I got for, what I considered, a load of junk.    If you're interested you can apply for an envelope online here.    The envelope is insured and free to post off, so if like me you have odd earrings and bits of broken gold chains you really don't want - cash them in!

Another thing, all my UK readers have you checked the loose change in your pocket recently?

We found one of those new 2008 undated 20 pence pieces (no date either side) and it's worth at least £50!     You can find out how to identify them here at the Royal Mint if you think you've got one.

We're selling it on Ebay, I'll keep you posted.

I've got some old gold I thought about mailing off, but how do you know you got a fair price?

I wish I had some old gold but alas, I have no jewelry that's worth a pence never mind a pound! Glad to hear that you got a nice bit of cash for your old gold, though!

The drinks are on you then!

I own nothing in gold...bah I wish you good luck on selling it :)

A fair price is what you're willing to accept isn't it Quilly? In my case I thought I'd only get about £10 so £73 was more than fair to me for odd earrings and broken chains. :)

Are you sure you haven't any old bits of odd or broken gold Linda?

Alas the money was already spoken for - we bought a swing for the garden Dumdad! :)

Oh that's a shame Thom x

I have a few bits of old gold I might well send off! Thanks for the tip!

do you know as soon as I saw your photo and mention of scrap gold I was reminded of that postal gold thing... do you think you can trust them?

ps did you know scrap gold is supposedly the best investment you can make at times when the currency and stock markets are in dangerous flux ...

thing is you're not (usually) going to get it at the gold exchange price, so how much over that should you be willling to pay???

that's the big Question for me ...

I think if you have pieces of Gold jewellery that can be worn you would perhaps be better off selling them to a store SAW - good luck with it. :)

I thought so too Al!

I hope you're as surprised as I was with what you get CG :)

If I hadn't agreed with the price they were paying me Gleds, all I had to do was send the cheque back and I would have got my gold back. I was more than happy with what they paid me for was what I considered scrap. :)

Gold is trading at record highs... It is an easily reclaimable metal, and those companies are making more than you on what you turned over! Still, pleasant surprises are always welcome!

Akelamalu said...

Yes I know those companies are making more than what they pay out naturally Buff but where else would I get rid of broken and odd jewellery and a very little amount at that - so I'm happy with what I got. :)

Good for you ... now put that mad money in an acct marked: NY Visit!

73 Pounds?
Thats like 400 dollars I think!!

Akelamalu said...

Unfortunately it has paid for our new garden swing which we have only been able to use a couple of times because of all the rain Daryl! :(

It's about $118 I think G-man :)

It's a good way of earning a bit of cash. Did I say 'a bit'
The charity British Heart Foundation also collect jewellery which aids their research.

Great price for the gold!

I've just been looking at all the 20p's on sale at Ebay. Some poor sods are bidding £50+ for a coin which the title describes as "Rare! No date on one side."

Bless 'em. LoL. I think they should have done their homework.

Good luck!

Hi A,
I think you ran a risk by sending that out ... you could have lost both the gold and the money.
Im glad you got that amount, though.
I also have lots of little things I never wear but they have a sentimental meaning to me. One day I'll also get rid of all that (?)
Smiles :)

It was an easy way of getting extra cash Valerie :)

I did but I didn't win Bee
:(

I was happy with what I got Laney. I noticed that on Ebay too - some people are so stupid aren't they? :(

The package they send you is insured and traceable through Royal Mail Dulce, so it wasn't really a risk. Of course I kept all the sentimental jewellery it was just odd and broken stuff I sent. :)

I've been seeing a lot of commercials for this sort of thing. I wondered if it was for real!

We have the same add here in the States but we don't have any old gold.
Good luck with E-Bay. Sometimes I do well there and other times it is disappointing.

Congrats! on your "found" money!

I've done it here, they actually have people in hotels that weigh it, etc. and give you cash on the spot! It's a good way to get rid of unusable pieces and make some money.

Ron said...

EXCELLENT, Akelamalu!

That was smart of you!

My mother has done the same thing with certain pieces of her jewelry.

Hey...and good luck on Ebay with the coin, m'dear!

Hope you had a great day!

Deb said...

Oh Happy Days! I have seen the commercial - but I don't have much gold except for in my mouth! Good luck on e-bay ~ that is interesting about the coins that weren't undated. Guess someone goofed, huh? Hope you get some sunny days so you can enjoy your swing! Take care.

Akelamalu said...

Well Postal Gold certainly is MamaZen!

Yes Ebay can be hit and miss Dr. John. I buy more than I sell! :0

Cheers Cloudia x

It's a great way to get rid of unusable pieces and make money Nitebyrd :)

Thanks Ron, I'll update on the coin. :)

Yes someone goofed big time on the coins Deb! I'm back at work on Monday so I don't think there's much chance of me being able to use the swing looking at the weather report! :(

Thanks Cheffie Mom :)

How great that you have a little job Bindi! I'm sorry you lost your jewellery in such a situation, well in any situation really. :(

I was a bit apprehensive about sending it too Lu but it turned out well. :)

Hi Gaelikaa, I wanted to pass on the info as I imagine a lot of people thought it may be a con - I did I admit. :)

Hmmm ... I've seen those ads too but don't know anyone who has used the service so this is good to know. Unfortunately, most of MY jewelry is SILVER rather than gold ... but I'm going to keep this info in mind. Thanks for sharing.
Hugs and blessings,

We have some of those companies here in the states too. I think the only gold stuff I have is my high school ring. I think I'll keep that for awhile longer.
