Wriggly Wrigglers.....

We have just received a leaflet from our local Council about their plans for recycling household waste.

At the moment the council provide us with two wheelie bins - one for garden waste and one for household rubbish. They have also provided us with a box in which to collect glass (bottles & jars) and cans, and a bag for newspapers and magazines. The council don't collect plasic bottles, but we do collect them and take them to the local recycling centre. At the moment all my kitchen waste goes in the compost bin at the bottom of the garden but obviously not left-over cooked food, so you can see we already recycle most of our household rubbish.

However, this leaflet informs us that the council will now supply us with another wheelie bin (I'll have to decorate all these bins!) in which to put glass, plastic and cans, and a large sack for newspapers and cardboard so they will be collecting everything.

To take recycling one step further I have just purchased a Wormery like this

A wormery transforms all your kitchen waste - peelings, eggshells, paper towels, cooked left-over food, etc, etc, into liquid fertiliser for your garden.
The one I have bought is a small one - Capacity : 21 Litres340mm x 440mm(13.4" x 17.3") and will sit outside my kitchen window. They don't smell and don't take much looking after. You just put your rubbish in and get the fertiliser out!
Read more about wormeries here, and I ordered mine from here.

I have been thinking about buying a wormery for some time but was galvanised into action by an advert I saw in a magazine by Shell Oil advocating recycling, it said:
Never throw anything away, there is no away

I'll let you know how it goes with the wormery when it arrives!

Slow progress.

What a great idea. We must have something comparable here in Sunny California. I will have to look.
Healing is slow progress. My ankle is still giving me fits if I over do, and I didn't even have surgery on it. I't like they told Grandma good days and bad days, then more good days!

Yes I'm sure you can get Wormeries in the US. I broke my ankle when I was 12 and even now I can get pain in it! Hopefully I will soon be getting more good days than bad!! :)

My son told me about wormeries about 12 months ago, he's in the process of clearing his back yard then he intends getting one too. I'm not too worried about progress being slow on my knee as long as there's progress. :)

I'll keep everyone posted about the wormery.

Hi...I'm hoping THIS comment will finally come thru! I stopped by the other day when I saw your lovely comment on my blog and Blogger would NOT cooperate, ha! Anyway, I love your idea of the wormery. My compost pile is full of the little creatures but I could always use more! I am a gardening NUT and my one contribution to Earth Day is putting up Mason Bee Houses a few years ago to encourage mason bees to come and use them for laying their eggs and then hibernating away for the winter. I now am the proud "mother" of my 4th generation of bees, and each year there are more and more. I've been terribly concerned about the serious demise of honey bees all around the world, and a lot of naturalists are encouraging people to try and help out the mason bees. They're prolific pollintors and they don't sting. My neighbor was commenting the other day about all of my mason bees coming over and pollinating her fruit trees, haha! I don't know if you have them in the UK, but it's a blast watching them go about their business...you can practically put your nose up to the houses to peer into the birthing tubes and never have to worry about being stung...they just ignore you. Thanks so much for stopping by...I hope you'll come again. The door's always open!!

Oh thanks for dropping by. I've never met anyone who keeps bees, it must be so interesting. I saw an article on the news recently that Giant Asian Hornets are desimating the bee population - have you had that trouble?

Thank you for the invitation back to your blog, be sure I will take it up. :)

Hi there! Thanks for popping over to my blog!

I have the same problem with my nails as you do. I've never bitten them but when they grow beyong the finger they just split. I've never worked out how to get nice strong nails. I think it MUST be a genetic thing!

I definitely think the cutting down on waste is something we all have to do. Good luck with that.

Nice to meet you!

MATH?

Rambling Woman

I'm not sure it's genetic - Mum and Dad both had strong nails - but then they didn't bite them!
Thanks for dropping by, I'll revisit you soon.

Dave

Here's the link for the place I ordered mine.

We have enormous tumble compost bin, my dad wouldn't get a wormery, which i wanted!

Worms love horse manure so if you can get that as a treat i am sure they will work a wee bit harder for you! you will have to take some before and after shots.

I often see horse manure in the roads round here - MWM won't get out of the car and put it in his pocket though!

No seriously, I didn't know that, but I'll keep it mind now.

Before and after shots - definitely!

I love this idea! We recycle our dog poop. I'm not sure what for, but it goes in a bin and is put to good use.

Thanks for stopping by, dear. I look forward to learning more about you--the 40 questions was a great start!

Oh I didn't know you could recycle dog poop! But then I suppose you can recycle most things apart from plastic carrier bags!

Thanks for stopping by I'm glad you enjoyed your visit, I hope it's the first of many. :)

I am glad to know about the wormery, I think I will get one, everytime I put potatoe peels in the garbage, I think, the worms could use this. And I love earth worms. When you have earthworms you have good soil. And it has taken me six years to get a few earthworms......

the link to the wormery didn't work, I will try it again another time, but it might be a broken link......

I think maybe you will have to just copy and paste the url for the wormeries into your address bar. Failing that just do a google search on wormeries.
