Logical?......

Recently my grandson Kai (5 on Thursday) had a little altercation with his Dad, my son, and said he wanted to go home to his Mum.    His Dad said OK I'll give you some money for bus fares, you need to get the number blah to blah, then the number blah to blah etc., etc.   Kai ignored him.

I thought this was the ideal opportunity to make Kai understand the importance of knowing his address (he lives with Mum) so I told him "If you got lost and a policeman/woman asked you where you live would you be able to tell them?"

He shook his head, so the lesson began.  After about 10 minutes of repeating his name, age and address I said

"Let's pretend you're lost and I'm a policewoman.   What's your name little boy?"

He answered as practiced.

"How old are you?"

Again he answered correctly.

"Where do you live sweetheart?"  I asked him.

"I don't need to know all this 'cause I'm not going on the bus!" he said.

Good news though, the following week I asked him his address and he remembered!

Looks like he felt the information should be on a need to know basis!

Well that completely makes sense--the bus knows exactly where he lives. ;)

In simpler times(and safer!)I would take a bus to our downtown at the age of eight, alone.. Nobody worried, because people looked out for the kids back then..

Don't kids say the greatest things??

And good going, Akelamalu!

I remeber my mother doing this same thing with me when I was a kid! She was especially concerned when we went shopping in a large department store too!

Happy Wednesday to ya, dear lady!

Oh Kai definitely knows his own mind Dumdad! :0

He is a smart lad Cath, he takes after his Daddy, who of course takes after me! ;)

I think it's a really important lesson Topchamp, I do it with all the grandkids. :)

Definiely Citizen! :)

He's certainly a character Snowelf!

LOL if Kai doesn't want to do it there's nothing you can do to make him - not even bribery I've tried it Lisa!

Precisely Daryl, smart eh?

Phone number next Bee, once I know he's got the address of pat.

When I was 12 I used to take my younger brother who was 5 on the bus to the zoo Buff! I wouldn't let my grandkids go on the bus on their own now!

Kai's Daddy used to get lost every week in the supermarket Ron, no matter how careful we were he always managed to disappear!

That is just too cute....
I keep telling my children that they need to be writing down the cute things that my grands are saying because the day will come they won't remember and wish they had listened to my advice.

Akelamalu said...

LOL Kai's Mum and Dad drive him everywhere too Fandango!

Thanks Kay :)

I like to think so Mary but I'm not so sure! LOL

Oh you're so right Jo, I wish I'd written down all the fun things my boys said when they were young.

So now he can go on the bus.

It is amazing the things that young children come out with. They don't miss a thing.

You probably held back the laughter but that was too funny! I imagine he said it with "attitude" too.

Good lesson for him, though.

As a mother you teach your children so much that you forget about cg!

They do come out with the most unexpected things Cheshire Wife! LOL

Oh definitely with attitude and we did have to supress the giggles Nitebyrd!

Kai means Sea Cloudia? How lovely!

They are a constant source of amusement Riverpoet! :)

Not surprising is it as they have so much information to take in during their formative years don't they Connie? :)

Oh I hope he never gets lost Deb! All our grandchildren are livewires!

"From the mouths of babes ... " oft comes logic and things that make us laugh right out loud!

Glad that Kai has some valuable information but I'm also glad he decided not to take the bus!

Oh, how sweet! You have to love the little tantrums and testings they throw at us when they're young, don't you? I'm glad you managed to find make something positive out of the experience.

Your son sounds like a very sensible parent!

Akelamalu said...

I remember my first address too Trav, we didn't have a telephone. :)

They do come out with some gems don't they Linda. I'm going to teach him his phone number next.

Kai tries to play Mum against Dad but neither of them will let him get away with it. As you say Jay you can always use these to a positive effect. :)

Fantastic. Love that one a typical child response. I wonder if all Kai's are the same? I have one who is quick with the clever answers too!!!
