It's arrived....

the wormery that is.

We read the instructions first - always a good idea - then unpacked it.

You get the bin and lid, a tap, a plastic platform, a bag of worms, a bag of compost and a bag of lime, actually I think this is crushed egg shells because the instructions say this is what you can use when the bag is empty. You have to check for acidity occasionally, the appearance of any tiny white worms indicates acidity so you add a handful of the lime. The tiger worms are red by the way.

At first I couldn't see the worms but then I noticed the little blighters wriggling (I dropped the bag! Oooops.)

You have to insert the plastic platform in the bin, place a 5" square of newpaper on it then empty the bag of compost on the top of the newspaper. Next you empty the worms onto the top.

Then you add three handfuls of kitchen waste. This is the worms first meal. We had to leave the bin open in the sunshine for ten minutes, apparently this encourages the worms to burrow into the bedding and settle in, before we could put the lid on.

We don't have to feed the worms for another week and then the week after that. After this we can put all our kitchen waste in daily and the first liquid fertiliser should be ready to drain off after about 10 weeks., and is so concentrated it has to be mixed with 10 parts water. The compost will be ready to use in about 8-10 months.

I'll take another photo next week when we feed them again, which will hopefully show how they've dealt with this lot.
So there we go, I'll keep you updated.
AND JUST FOR FUN
I found this at 'The Brick Yard', go Here

akelamalu,
oh, i have so much to say.

first, Little Madeleine. The media here is covering her story. I haven't watched television today, so I don't know the latest, but everyone is enchanted by her innocence and prays for her. it is heartbreaking.

second, happy birthday to your baby. mine will be 33 in june.

third, i loved your 'thought for the day'. i needed that.

last but not least, 'the wormery'. it's really something, and oh, by the way, the fact that you read the directions first is what impresses me the most. anyway, when i saw it, i immediately copied it, photos and all, and took it to my father so he could see. i knew he would be interested and he was. now he thinks i should get one. LOL he is such a gardener and finds this sort of thing interesting. when we get him in his wheel chair this afternoon i will wheel him in here, and let him see it on the computer. he'll loves that.

I'll have to try that wormery thing next year (hoping to have a house with a gradne by then!). And I will have to show that skeleton thing to my kids - they'll like it. In fact, I may steal it for my side bar list of time killers.

Apparently there is still no news re Maddie. The reward for information about her has now risen to 2.5 million. I hope they find her.
Thank you for the birthday wishes for D. My eldest will be 37 next year - scary!!
I hope your Dad gets his wormery, especially as he is a keen gardener.

cs
I hope you manage to get a house with a garden, the wormerys can be kept in a kitchen apparently but I'm not sure I'd do that! I liked the skeletons too!

Bee
You don't like worms then?? :)
Thanks on behalf of D.

Letha
Perhaps you will get one when you get your new house sorted?

Hi, I have a wormery for years and they are fantastic, i got mine from Wiggly Wigglers, they have got a video on their web page at the minute showing you haoew to do it.
I am also trying out a Bokashi bucket , you can put different waste from your kitchen in here and either add it to the compost bin or into the garden, the bran you add has good bacteria in it and improves your soil.I will be doing updates on my blog to see if this works.
Cheers Mark

Oh I'll have a look at the video. You can recommend wormeries then?

The bokashi bucket sounds interesting, I'll be over to check it out.

Thanks for dropping by. :)

Hi Akelamalu,
the one i use they dont sell anymore but it is a bit like the Waste Juggler, i think their most popular one is the Can-O-Worms. They all work the same way,you have just got to remember to keep it moist,if it gets to wet add shredded news paper, add things in balance, too much of one thing can upset the worms and add crushed egg shells every now and then to make sure it doesn't get to acidic.
I can definately recommend them you will notice your waste go down dramatically which can only be a good thing if we end up paying by weight what the council collect.
I have added your link, are you happy to exchange?
Cheers Mark
