We noticed some ants in the lounge and when we looked behind the sofa there was a steady stream coming in under the skirting on the gable end. Now we can only presume this is a direct result of having the cavity wall insulation done a couple of weeks ago as we've never had ants before. Luckily we had some Nippon Ant Killer liquid, which we had used on an ants nest outside, so MWM put some on a piece of celophane where the ants were coming in. The ants were all over it in seconds and stayed like that all evening, when I got up this morning they'd all disappeared. Apparently it works by attracting the ants then they eat it and take it back to the nest where it kills them. Anyway, hopefully it's done the trick but we'll leave it down for a few days to make sure.
Later on yesterday I was busy blogging when I heard scuffling behind me and a big black cat wandered in the study. MWM was outside and had left the front door open allowing it to wander in. Of course I shouted and shushed and it shot out, so I went downstairs to look for it and asked MWM if he's seen it, he hadn't and went upstairs to check that it wasn't still in the house. He found it hiding in our bedroom and tried to pick it up to put it outside but it shot into the study again, ran up the wall and ceiling, then landed on the curtain rail, which it managed to pull completely off the wall before MWM managed to grab it, but not before it sank it's claws into his arm! I don't know who was more fraught the cat or MWM!
I had to go to the dentist yesterday for a 6 monthly check up, a scale and polish and an extraction - I was charged £43.50 for the privilege under the new NHS Dentistry charges. don't it make you want to rinse and SPIT!!!
On a completely different subject I read in yesterday's paper that an 84 year old Gurka war hero, who won the Victoria Cross when he single-handedly took out some Japanese machine-gun nest in Burma during the Second World War, is being denied the right to live in England. He is now suffering from a heart condition, diabetes and asthma and lives in near poverty on a hillside in Nepal but wants to spend his last years here. The Home Office has told him: "You have failed to demonstrate you have strong ties with the UK". How much stronger do your ties have to be than being awarded the highest military decoration for being willing to lay down your life for this country?
However there is a petition to the Government that requests
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to immediately and retrospectively give all Gurkha servicemen and their immediate families past and present british citizenship.
If you are a British citizen or resident you can sign the petition here.
Our Goverment should be totally ashamed!
My knee
Wednesday 30th May
Feeling really good, not using the crutch around the house at all now, though I still need it when I go outside.

ps: will sent bathroom!
Tiny hint for the next time the cat gets in...if it does say...
find a piece of chicken or some sort of food cats like and just hold it near...they'll come down to investigate...
I'm sorry but I teehee'd at this story...I'm not laughing at ya...I'm laughing with ya....
:)
Oh my! I know I am not suppose to be giggling ...LOL Sorry about the cat scratches on MWM. My kids would have begged can we keep it? ...as Winnie Pooh would say oh bother. As for the ants try making a line with cinnamon they won't go past.
How sad about the soldier.
Hugs,
Angel ( D.)
I wish I could have signed the petition ... just shows that government stupidity flourishes on both sides of the pond.
We have fire ants really bad down here in TX, so we have to spray every now and then. Their bites have actually killed people! Crazy, huh? Take care.
Sounds as if you have had your hands full. Ants, Cats and hero left by the wayside.
Glad to hear the knee is still mending well. At least there is good side to today's post
bee
MWM don't like cats and they don't like him!

Don't apologise for laughing I nearly wet myself, but don't tell MWM. Thanks for the tip.
angel
I'm hoping the ants have gone now with the Nippon but if they come back I'll keep the cinnamon in mind, thanks.
paul
I think governments are stupid the world over.
josh
I don't think these ants bite, perhaps I'll ask MWM to investigate eh? ((wink, wink))
dave
Oh yes, it wasn't all bad! :)
The story about the war-hero is outrageous! Another thing for our Government to be ashamed of though I doubt they are.
Have signed the petition and will encourage others in my family to do the same.
headless chicken
I thought so too! Nice to hear you have signed the petition, the more the better.
lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
you've really had some ups and downs. we used to get ants every year at the same time...spring time, when we lived in maryland. never figured it out - just killed the little buggers. the cat story was a hoot. sorry about the curtains and MWM. the war hero story is just too sad.
I wish I were a British citizen as I would most definitely sign that petition. What does the Home Office over there require for crying out loud? How much does a man have to do?
:-) Sounds like you don't need a forest for wildlife - you have a menagerie in your house already!
If you ever get uncomfortable leaving nippon down, I've been told that chalk dust does the trick... they just don't like to cross it!
I'm just off to sign that petition... how horrible is our government, that it uses the services of people, but don't allow them entry into the country!
Shall be going straight over to sign that petition. Thanks for highlighting it!
Your home must feel so comforable, all manner of creatures want to make themselves at home.
Enjoyed your blog. First time visitor. Was it a black cat??
I have 2 cats of my own and regular visits from 3 others. It drives me crazy!
I agree, our government should be ashamed.
£43.50 sounds expensive from your point of view but it is considered the normal price in my country...well, of course not converted into pounds...:)
oh dear, what an exciting day...sorry, i couldn't help laughing
Another great post! Sorry to hear our governments are taking the same stupid pill but I glad to hear you are not using the crutch inside. In time you will be able to get rid of it all together.
The black cat story is funny. I have had a few critters invite themselves into our home. Not the most exciting thing trying to get them out.
bonnie ann
I still haven't stopped sniggering about MWM and the cat, though I do it secretly. ((wink))
linda
Precisely, it's truly disgusting.
annelisa
No critters today. :) Glad you're signing the petition.
ruth
Thanks for signing the petition, I hope lot will.
julia
As long as nothing bigger than a cat calls I don't mind!
rice
Thanks for calling by. Yes it was a black cat - not lucky for MWM though! :)
rodrigo
Thanks for stopping by. :)
miss u
I don't mind cats but MWM isn't too keen as they keep messing up his garden!
elween
The annoying part is we already pay National Insurance via our salaries, so we are really paying twice.
cg
Oh don't be sorry, I'm still chuckling!

Governments - BAH!!
Yes I'm working on getting rid of the crutch. I suppose we're lucky it's only ants and cats - could be bears if we lived in the woods!
