Friday 55 Flash Fiction #116 Online Friend

Jamie needed someone to talk to, he was lonely.

At school they all called him a Geek.

He was fascinated with his new online friend.

They enjoyed the same things - stamp collecting, reading, computer games.

They arranged to meet at McDonalds.

"He didn't say, in the chatroom, that he was an old man" thought Jamie.

Friday 55 Flash Fiction is brought to you by G-man (Mr Knowitall). The idea is you write a story in exactly 55 words. If you want to take part pop over and let G-man know when you've posted your 55.

dangerous times... Gone for a poem this week based on the Etheree form created about twenty years ago by an Arkansas poet named Etheree Taylor Armstrong It normally consists of ten lines of unmetered and unrhymed verse, the first line having one syllable, each succeeding line adding a syllable. I added an extra row for the word count and the punch line. See what I mean here.

Hello, dear, from California. You did well, creating a frightful situation in so few words. Our poor vulnerable children.
My 55 is up as well.

Which is the biggest problem with on-line "friends" - you never know who they really are or what they're really after sometimes. Hopefully Jamie told his parents where he was going and what he was doing though I'm afraid he might not have.

loved it,
online dating or befriending is like that, it ends up a joke!

Good little parable to remember..

Yesss, the "bad guys" have made it difficult for us old Peeps to be friendly. So we live with that, of course.

This is why I always introduce myself on chat as a 14-year-old (I'm 76) and that way I get to meet lots of Peeps my age, but they always seem like--well, SICK--grin!

What's "chat"? (another grin!)

Yep...
Just like people do not realize that I'm actually a 29 year old Illegal alien Mother of eight from Costa Rica!
Excellent 55 Ake..

Watch out for those predators...inciteful 55! :0

Travis Cody said...

I like how you leave the ending open to interpretation. I think 100% of the comments before me immediately thought "predator". But I went the other direction. You didn't specifically say that the old man was a predator, or that Jamie was afraid.

So perhaps the old man and Jamie settled into a pleasant grandfatherly relationship.

I like the story.

Well done you for bringing this topic to light again... it is scarily true for some young people :0(

That's a parent/grandparent's biggest fear isn't it Linda? One doesn't know until maybe it's too late! :(

Glad you liked it Jingle

It is Buff

Yes, it's always the case that the bad guys bring everyone under suspicion steveronie :(

One can be anything online G-man! ;)

Thanks Spiky and I look forward to hearing about the concert x

It is scary Mama Zen :(

Certainly we have to warn our kids that they're out there Lulda

No I didn't say the old man is a predator and it's nice that you thought maybe he wasn't Trav but, unfortunately, an adult not revealing their age online when talking to children is very suspicious, don't you think? I'm glad you liked the story.

Thanks Sashindoubutsu.

It's very frightening isn't it Eternally Distracted :0

Unfortunately yes it does Lettuce :(

Mine too, when I wrote it Shrinky :(
