Remember when........

I received this in an email and it brought back some wonderful memories for me, I hope it does the same for you.

REMEMBER WHEN?

All the girls wore ugly gym slips

It took five minutes for the TV to warm up

Nearly everyone's Mum was at home when the kids got home from school

Nobody owned a thoroughbred dog

You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny

Your Mother wore nylons that came in two pieces

You got your windscreen cleaned, oil checked, and petrol served, without asking, all for free, every time.

It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents

They threatened to keep children back a year if they failed. . . And they did it!

When a Ford Zephyr was everyone's dream car...

And people went steady

No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked

Playing cricket with no adults to help the children with the rules of the game

Bottles came from the corner shop without safety caps and hermetic seals ........because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger

And with all our progress, don't you wish, just once, you could slip back in time ....... and savour the slower pace, and share it with the children of today.

When being sent to the head's study was nothing ........ compared to the fate that awaited the student at home

Basically we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc.

Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat!

But we survived because their love was greater than the threat.

As well as summers filled with bike rides, rounders , Hula Hoops,

and visits to the pool, and eating sherbert with liquorice sticks.

Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, 'Yes, I remember that'?

I am sharing this with you today because it ended with a Double Dare to pass it on.

To remember what a Double Dare is, read on.

And remember that the perfect age is somewhere between old enough to know better and too young to care.

Send this on to someone who can still remember the Lone Ranger and Sgt Bilko

How Many Of These Do You Remember?

Coca Cola in bottles.
Blackjacks and bubblegums.
Home milk delivery in glass bottles with tinfoil tops.
Hi-FI's & 45 RPM records.
Adding Machines??
Scalextric.

Do You Remember a Time When..

Decisions were made by going 'eeny-meeny-miney-moe'?

'Race issue' meant arguing about who ran the fastest?

Catching tiddlers could happily occupy an entire day?

It wasn't odd to have two or three 'Best Friends'?

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was'chickenpox'?

Having a Weapon in School meant being caught with a catapault?

War was a card game?

Cigarette cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle?

Taking drugs meant orange - flavored chewable aspirin?

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon?

If you can remember most or all of these, Then You Have Lived!!!!!!!

I remember a fair amount of these. A few were a bit before my time.

It is amazing how much faster and more complicated life seems to be with each generation. Thanks for the memories of some of the simpler times.

And returning glass bottles to the shop and getting money back...

Goodness, I remember them all, but I still have daily deliveries of glass milk bottles with tinfoil caps. I switched allegiance from supermarket to milkman. Loved this post, with permission I will pass it on to friends.

I remember almost all, and wow what a different world! "When War Was A Card Game", there's a good title for something.

A while back we were pondering the unanswerable questions on a car trip, like "why don't sheep shrink in the rain when they're all in wool" type thing, when my adult daughter pipes up with "Yeah, why do we say *dial* a phone, when we don't?" My husband and looked at each other; WE remember dialing phones! And when we told her about sssppppiiiiinnn---tic-tic-tic-tic, she thought we were making it up. Boy I felt old. No 999 either, you had to know the police or ambulance local number and if there were 8's and 9's, Lord, the whole house could burn down by the time you finished dialing the fire department.

There I go....
LOL

I remmeber maybe only half of them, so thanks for making me feel young for a change!

those that remember half will feel young - but i remember most of them and now i feel sooooooo old -

some were not our side of the pond i don't think - catching tiddlers and frog spawn was a fab fav of mine - before hi-fi i had one of those old fashioned record players with the wind up handle and big thingy on top (senior moment - can't remember what it's called) and i had danny kaye's pogo the puppet and tubby the tuba

life was so much simpler then - now the world is a smaller place and technology so advanced - today childhood doesn't hold the same sweet innocence of the past

I enjoyed the simplicity of our childhoods, though I did not know it until I had my own children.

Anything was possible if you had a dream.

I remember so many of these things with fondness and nostalgia for a simpler time. Thanks for sharing!

We did not have parents who said things like, "What would you like for breakfast, lunch or dinner?" We ate what was put in front of us and best of all, there was never anything left over. We ate the lot!

We would spend hours making paper kites, building things out of scraps like old pram wheels or cycle rims, inventing our own games, playing traditional games called 'hide and seek', 'kick the can' and 'rounders', ride old cycles down-hill only to find out we forgot the brakes didn't work! After running into the bushes a few times we learned to solve the problem.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, drinking from the same bottle, and NO ONE actually died from this.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day during the holidays. We were never ever bored, and we were allowed freedom all day as long as we were back when the 'lights were lit', or when our parents told us to do so. No one was able to reach us all day by phone, mobile or otherwise. And we were OK!

Our parents trusted us to go on picnics with everyone and anyone, a friend of a friend would be OK. And we survived.

Not everyone made it into the teams we wanted to. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!

I refer to a way of life lived half a century ago, in a paradise half a world away, and it was called INDIA!

The simpler times were so much easier weren't they Jeff?

Ah memories are made of this Thom LOL

The old cars were so elegant weren't they Laney?

You didn't have a scalectrix Richard and you only know tights? Oh my you missed a lot honey.

Life was definitely different then Marmie!

We used to go round the neighbourhood collecting glass bottles to take them back to the shop for the deposit Dumdad, we made a packet!

I have a milkman delivering milk too Valerie, it tastes nicer I think. Of course you may copy and pass this on m'dear. x

My grandchildren think MWM and I were on the Ark Susan because of the things we remember! LOL

I take it you used to play that Gleds? ;)

Well good for you SAW, I'm glad it's made you feel better hon. x

I remember them all too Ann - those were the days eh? ;)

Well we are the same age G-man so I expected you would remember most of them. ;)

Home milk delivery in glass bottles with tinfoil tops.

OMG...that was the BEST!!!!

And....

No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked.

Absolutely!

Thanks for the great trip down memory lane, m'dear!

Thanks for the memories. Life certainly seemed to be better and less complicated in those days!

All that, and much, much more... it was a simpler, happier world in many ways! No one was rich in money, but very rich with family and friends- and we didn't even realize it until it was too late..

I even remember 78rpm records and wind up victrolas.

Julia Phillips Smith said...

'Taking drugs meant orange - flavored chewable aspirin?' - LOL!!

Yes, indeedie. I had a little record player with 45 and 33 1/3 settings. My best friend had an old TV in the basement that had to warm up. Used to get Coke in bottles. I remember the adding machine my parents used to tally up their taxes.

'Bottles came without hermetic seals...because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger'

I remember the evolution of safety seals. Once bitten, twice shy, but I'd rather the seals than not, really.

Akelamalu said...

Ooops sorry Nessa ;)

You and me both Cloudia!

They were good memories weren't they Ron? :)

You're welcome Lulda :)

Didn't it just Cheshire Wife!

That's just it Buff, by the time we realise it's all gone! :(

I remember those too Dr. John!

It brought back some good memories for you too Julia! :)

I did remember a good bit of these but have to admit not all.
Not sure what a gym slip is, a regulation uniform of some sort I guess. I never played cricket, altho we went rollerskating and played hopscotch.
A head's study I think might be what we called our school's Principal.
At home, we had the threat of a belt for serious offenses, altho I don't really ever remember getting whacked with it. LOL
Didn't know what rounders was, but we did ride bikes and played Jailbreak in the neighborhood.
HI-FI's OH absolutely!!! My parents had one and I got a real taste for Bill Haley and Damita Jo and I love Big Band music now too.

When I was in high school we still only had typewriters and we had to learn how to use an adding machine and do math the long way and make change by counting it out.
I didn't use a computer until my senior year of high school and it seemed soooo strange! Can you imagine the world now without internet and email??
I have no idea what a Scalextric or a Tiddler is but I think I'm going to base more of my decisions on 'eeny-meeny-miney-moe' because some things have become just too serious!!
Thanks for alot of neat things to remember!

Gosh, those made me think! Life was so different then. I wonder if all the progress since then has really made us any happier - or the reverse?

I don't remember much of those. I wish I did though. Two piece nylons...sounds sexy.

I do remember some similar things though...

Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day.

We lived the life we chose we'd fight and never lose for we were young and sure to have our way.

Akelamalu said...

Somethings don't translate over the pond Crystalchick but you get the drift. Those were the days eh?

Nostalgia makes you think we could be worse off now doesn't it CG?

A gymslip is a one piece garment worn as a uniform with a blouse underneath Spiky. Of course you can still get two piece nylons - Stockings!

I remember that song too Lady's Life! :)
