Friday 55 Flash Fiction # 214 The end.......

1st February - the day destined for my demise.

Thirteen years service to my country, now it's the end.

I've never been popular, too small everyone complained.

They will be sorry, the price of everything will go up when they get rid of me.

The halfpenny coin ceased to be legal tender on this day 1984.

The last line is so true, all prices were rounded up not down!

Friday 55 Flash Fiction is brought to you by G-man (Mr Knowitall). The idea is you write a story in exactly 55 words. If you want to take part pop over and let G-man know when you've posted your 55.

And at least a regular guy, unlike that threepenny bit.........

Very good. It's funny how we get nostalgic about these things: half crowns, shillings, florins, threepenny bits, sixpences etc. (I won't mention farthings or groats!)

Those of us who still calculate backwards know that a half P was actually worth more than 1d, so when all the prices went up I used to think things like "that's another thruppence!"

I paid eleven bob for a Mars bar a couple of weeks ago! :)

Nice one. And everything rounded up in price.

What about the Shilling?
Do they still have that?
Is there a Quid?
Too mind boggling for a Yank.
But it sure is GREAT to see ya back Pearlie Mae.
Loved your Changing 55
Thanks for playing, and have a Kick Ass Week-End...:-)

Nice one. Gone are the days, eh? It's funny you should post this, Pearl, I came across a ha'penny piece the other day. It was wedged in the base of an old wardrobe. Not mine, I hasten to add, I would have spent it before it got lost....grins.

It's the same when it came to our $2.00 bills here in the States. I think we can still use them, but they're not made anymore.

GREAT one, m'dear!

Clever you are!

Have a super weekend!

Thanks Cloudia x

It was inevitable Beach :(

Quite Tony ;)

That's cos we were brought up with them Dumdad. You remember Farthings and Groats?????? ;)

I know exactly what you mean AJ!

No shillings now G-man and we have £1 coin now. Have to say decimal currency is easier to calculate but us old'uns miss Pounds shillings and pence. LOL

You could get a lot with a halfpenny back in the day Valerie so you noticed if you lost one!

I don't think we can use the halfpenny now Ron.

One penny is not worth much nowadays. How long until that goes too?

I'm happy to make you smile Melanie xx

Not long methinks Cheshire Wife. Come to that £1 isn't worth much these days either!

My children loved the half-pennies. They were still floating around here and there in 1985. They loved that these coins weighed almost nothing.
