Superstitious, moi?......

I'm not superstitious (she says with crossed fingers), well I can't afford to be having lived at Number 13 for the past 29 years!

Although, saying that, I would

  • probably walk round a ladder rather than under it

  • always say good day to a magpie

  • never put new shoes on the table

  • not open an umbrella inside

  • not cut my toenails on a Friday

  • not break a mirror

  • touch wood so as not to tempt fate

  • avoid standing on a crack on the pavement

  • always throw a pinch of salt over my left shoulder if I spilled some

  • not pass anyone on a staircase

otherwise I'm not superstitious at all!

Are you superstitious?

If you want to see some more superstitions look here.

  1. I live at #13 too! I've never felt supersitious here; the day I moved in was a dream come true. When I was a child my family and I flew to Singapore on Friday 13th and lived to tell the tale.
I don't really think of myself as superstitious though I'll often say "Touch wood" and always walk round a ladder in case someone's painting up at the top and could drip paint on me!

  2. I have a silver dollar I've been known to take to the casino with me, and have thrown spilled salt over my shoulder a few times!

  3. Ooh Snap Ruth. Like you the number of the house didn't make any difference it was a dream come true. We've been really happy here and very lucky!

  4. Has the silver dollar brought you luck though buffalodickdy?

  5. The story of the coin actually goes a little deeper. It was given to me by a friend on New Years' Eve, as a remembrance of the fact that I had almost died earlier that year, and he was glad that I didn't. It signifies the luck I had, not the luck it gives...

  6. I'm not superstitious about No 13 really, nor about the toenails (well, not until i found out...) but I do all of the others LOL xx

  8. I live at #13 as well.

My life is one big disaster area!

Seriously, I do touch wood, but that's about it I think. I've never heard of the cutting toenails one...I need to google!

  9. 13 is considered lucky in some cultures, I believe.

I have a "lucky" plastic green man that I carry when I travel abroad (I found it on a beach when I was about six years old - the sea washed it up to my feet while I was paddling). Silly really.

  10. That's a great reason to consider the coin your lucky one buffalodickdy.

  12. Miss u
Wow another one living at #13,I think I'll do a poll!

My granny would never let us cut our toenails on a Friday, that's where I first heard it.

  13. I didn't know that dumdad, but I've always considered it my lucky number!

About your little green man - I would call that fate and not silly, definitely lucky!!

  16. If you cross your fingers whilst walking under a ladder the whole jinx thing doesn't work.
Of course some workman up the ladder may still drop a pot of paint or whatever on your head but that will be because he broke a mirror on his way to work!

  17. Hehe, good thinking Pauline :)

  18. I used to be--the ladder thing is the only one that has a basis in reality, however.

I think superstitions involving wood date back to the Druids usually.

  24. This morning, I passed a magpie limping up the stairs, one wing touching the wooden rail.
    I said "Good day!"
It just looked at me and yelled:
"Don't you say good day to me! I've just slipped on some salt, tripped on a crack on the pavement and smashed the mirror I've just bought!"

  25. Think you know my answer to this one!!!!!

  26. I hate odd numbers
    never walk under a ladder
go to great lengths to not break mirrors (am still 166 years in the hole)
    but other than that...

  27. I got married (the first time) on Friday the 13th. Divorced many years later.

    So much for superstition.

(P.S. But I do x-out black cats if they walk in front of me)

  28. Not at all. I believe you make you own luck. Bad or good.

My wife, on the other hand, is very much into believing things of this nature.

Hope your weekend is going well!

  29. I have the number 13 in my address too. But have more numbers after it, so I don't let it bother me. As for other things I don't really think about them. When I read your list I already knew I was in trouble. I cut my toe nails yesterday (friday) and I throw everything I buy new on the table, so I am sure shoes have been there before. lol

  32. I hadn't heard of most of those superstitions! I tend to be aware or wary and don't usually walk under ladders, but sometimes I think - what am I doing? And walk under one then panic!

  40. In Italy, nr 13 is considered a lucky number. I'm not superstitious, but there are some things I wouldn't do just because...

  41. Say good day to a magpie? What? Is that true for crows and blackbirds, too, or is it specific to magpies? Also never heard of the toenails one. But I do toss salt over my shoulder and into the devil's eye! But oly because i read aboutthat one as a child and thought it was unusally funny.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh yes cs you should always greet a magpie, apparently it wards of the bad luck they bring. Have you heard the rhyme that goes with magpies?

    One for sorrow,
    Two for joy,
    Three for a girl,
    Four for a boy,
    Five for silver,
    Six for gold,
    Seven for a secret
    Never to be told.

And, yes, it does only apply to magpies.

  43. Never heard that one about toenails. You must have made that up...
