Friday 55 Flash Fiction #191 A New Knee

"You'll son have a right knee that you can depend on my dear" the surgeon performing her knee replacement surgery assured her.

She's suffered for years and finally she was getting it sorted out.

Waking up from the anaesthetic Jane lifted the bedclothes and was shocked to see the huge dressing

on her left leg!

Five years ago on 26th February 2007 I had a total knee replacement.   Thankfully my surgeon performed the operation on the correct knee and it has been a complete success.

Friday 55 Flash Fiction is brought to you by G-man (Mr Knowitall). The idea is you write a story in exactly 55 words. If you want to take part pop over and let G-man know when you've posted your 55.

  1. That is just terrible! As a member of the operating room staff at the hospital I work at, I can tell you, we go through a million check points to ensure we operate on the proper side!

Glad your surgeon fixed the correct knee!!

  2. Bummer!

Yeah, I work at a hospital as well and the checks they do these days are extensive. But I have heard stories about stuff that happened years ago.

Save your knees and lose weight. Is my new mantra.

  4. Seriously, this happened to a friend of mine and the doctor trying to cover his butt claimed she'd have needed that one replaced 'eventually' too .. oy

  5. It's a worrying thought when an op is due. I'd be tempted to mark the knee with a long-lasting marker pen... just in case...grins.

I guess it's because mistakes like that were made that hospital now do such intesive checks Beach.

Wow you actually know someone it happened to Daryl? That's scary!

They did actually mark my knee with a thick black arrow before the operation after double checking with me which knee needed the op Valerie!

No soccer but a sport related injury G-man. I'm running now, the op was five years ago.

That's right BankerChick, I started the blog to chart my progress after the op.

  14. Well maybe Jane could simply look at it as getting a jump ahead on when her left knee was going to be needing a replacement also! Or she could sue the surgeon and get the correct knee done for free as well as pocket some cash for pain and suffering along with having a brand new left knee!
