What on earth are you wearing?...

Did your Mother ever make you wear something ridiculous, something you hated, an item of clothing that made you a laughing stock at school?

I remember I had one of those elasticated bubble swimsuits - you know the ones that fitted OK until you got in the water then they ballooned out so you almost floated away. I suppose the male equivalent were knitted swim trunks which ended up round their knees once they got wet!

I hated the cotton socks Mum used to get me because they always went baggy and slipped under my heel - I was forever pulling them up.Thankfully someone invented socks that were a bit stretchy, which solved this problem.

We seemed to have a lot of fog when I was a child and if ever we had to go out in a 'pea souper' I had to have a scarf wrapped around my head so it covered my mouth so I wouldn't breathe in the fog! Of course in winterI had to wear woollen gloves, which I didn't mind apart from the piece of string attached to the gloves which had to be threaded through the sleeves of my coat so that I wouldn't lose my gloves.

When I started senior school I had to have a uniform which I was really looking forward to wearing, but why, oh why, do Mums insist on buying everything two sizes two big so it will last, saying "you'll grow into it"? My pleated skirt was calf length, the sleeves on my whiteblouse were only prevented from dangling down because mum moved the button on the cuff so it was tighter and my gabardine mac was almost trailing on the floor! Alright, alright, maybe I'm exaggerating slightly but you get the picture don't you?

The worse thing ever though was THE LIBERTY BODICE! It was meant to keep me warm, and it did, but I just hated those rubber buttons, especially after it had been through the boiler and the wringer a fewtimes and the buttons became misshapen and sticky!

What was the worst item of clothing you were made to wear when you were a child?

PS If you'd like to try the Nursery Rhyme Quiz below remember you have until Friday to email me your answers.

A snowsuit, complete with idiot mittens. Idiot mittens you ask? The kind that are clipped to the snowsuit by elastic cords so you don't lose them! An oil cloth rain coat, complete with a mask/hat thing that made you look like a midget welder... Blue jeans that were so long, they would roll up cuffs halfway to your knees... clip on ties for church... orthepedic shoes-black or brown with laces because I was a little pidgeon toed... This could take all morning....

I had a fake fur hat which fastened with a bobble under the chin - in ORANGE. I looked like a tubby belisha beacon. Plus tartan "trews" that itched - i can't wear wool next to my skin but mum never believed me LOL.
Great post!!

A light brown suit that was two sizes bigger than me when I was 7 or 8.
And it was two sizes smaller when I was made to still wear it at 10 or 11.

Oh, how could I forget! My grandad married again after my grandmother died and the new Gran loved knitting. She knitted, wait for it, 2 yes 2 grey pleated school skirts with holes at the top for elastic to go through. Oh they were embarassing - I just died for smart pleated terylene skirts.
I have a picture of me wearing one which must have been taken on a Sunday visit so obviously I was forced into them AT ALL TIMES.

I think my grandparents and mom were pretty stylin'. I always liked what people bought me to wear. The only thing I was embarassed to be in was an old brown car we had for awhile.

Because I walked like a "cricket" when I was a kid (my legs rubbed together) my mother always made me wear ugly pull-on polyester pants. I wasn't allowed to wear jeans even in high school until I bought my own in my junior year and took to sneaking out of the house in them!

Thinking back to the clothes I had as a kid.....nothing jumps out at me. What we wore was kind of like what we ate, whatever we had. Not that we ate our clothes.

I never had more than three outfits at any one time, and only one pair of shoes and wore them till they wore out. It was a real eye opener, when at the age of 13 I found out that people actually could have more than one pair of shoes. I was like "cream", wore clothes until they were so small I couldn't get into them anymore. I guess that is when I really disliked them, when they hurt. Shoes especially.

I can't actually recall my Mum making me wear anything I didn't like, but looking back, I made some pretty awful choices myself! Remember the year of the ra-ra skirt? I had a blue one with white polka dots and wore it with my Mums American Tan tights and a pair of white ankle socks.

God. What was I thinking!

a really horrible scratchy school uniform. Also great baggy red knickers to play games in. Yeuck!

GEWELS said...

ditto on the uniform. I used to roll it up at the waistband so it hit above the knee- not to my ankles.
Oh yeah- and brown suede hush puppy oxfords- when all the cool girls were wearing saddle shoes or penny loafers. What I wouldn't have given for saddle shoes.
The cool girls were also the ones whose mothers hemmed their skirts above their knees (no need to roll the waistband) Gosh I hated them!

Another one with itchy trousers eh Gleds :(

Knitted skirts Belle, you've got to post that picture!

I am having a good day Diana and being a friend to you is my pleasure. x

Lucky you on the clothes front Julia but now you can choose your own car! :)

I bet you wore those jeans to death right Linda?

I only ever had one pair of shoes at a time too Nea, but boy have I made up for it since! Emelda Marcos has nothing on my collection! :)

Did you wear a pencil skirt with it Mimi? ((wink))

Ah but I bet you looked the bee's knees at the time Miss U!

You were very lucky Elween!

I had some Hush Puppy Oxfords too when I was about 15 but they were very popular then Gewels. Oh I hated the girls whose Mum's could sew too!

Definitely ski pants that we had to stuff our skirts and dresses down into, otherwise it was too cold to walk to school with just leotards.

Oh I remember ski pants MOI!
